室長兼講師結城が長年ファンのユーミン（荒井～松任谷由実）の曲の歌詞からピックアップして英訳、ポイント文法のチェックをしています！

今回は23枚目アルバム「DAWN PURPLE」の最後の「9月の蝉しぐれ」の冒頭、♪「ありがとうと云える日　来ることなんてないと思っていた」（作詞作曲：松任谷由実 1991年「9月の蝉しぐれ」より引用）。

便宜上「私はあなたに『ありがとう』と言える日が来るとは思ったいなかった。」とします。

これを、「日」を「物」として前置詞on の目的語「その日」という名詞扱いで２文に分けると、

I didn't think the day would come. (私はその日が来るとは思っていなかった。)

I can say to you, "Thank you ." on the day.（私はその日あなたにありがとうと言える。）

先行詞をthe day として、関係代名詞を使って1文にすると、

I didn't think the day on which I could say to you,"Thank you." would come.　

＝ I didn't think the day which（that) I could say to you,"Thank you."on would come.

＝I didn't think the day I could say to you,"Thank you." on would come.＜関係代名詞省略＞

また、「日」を「その日に（＝その時）」という「時」を表す副詞としてとらえて2文に分けると、

I didn't think the day would come. (私はその日が来るとは思っていなかった。)

I can say to you, "Thank you ." then.（私はその時あなたにありがとうと言える。）

となり、この場合関係副詞when(that)を用いて1文にすると、

I didn't think the day when(that) I could say to you,"Thank you." would come.　となります。

when節を後ろに廻して、I didn't think the day would come　when(that) I could say to you,"Thank you." という場合もあります。

先日のＮＨＫＦＭ「Yuming Chord」の「昆虫特集」最後にかかっていた曲、遠い日の恋が蘇る切ないモードがこの晩夏の時節の空気感を絶妙に醸し出している、好みの渋路線曲の一つです！

ちなみに、「しぐれ（時雨）」は秋の末から冬の初めごろに、降ったりやんだりする小雨。

「蝉しぐれ」は、多くのセミが一斉に鳴きたてる声を時雨の降る音に見立てた語。何とも美しい日本語ですね。英語ではchorus of cicadas など。蝉＝cicada　です。
